A lesson in layers
To dress a playful kid in the right clothes when the temperatures shift outside, can be a real struggle. How can they be warm throughout the day, but not sweat as they become more active? The trick is to layer! There are three types of layers you need to keep in mind when dressing the kids. The base layer which helps keep the moisture away, a mid-layer that helps them stay warm and the cover layer that helps protect from rain, wind, or snow.
1.
Base layer
The layer closest to the skin should be breathable, fitted and feel comfortable on the skin. Quality materials, such as merino wool, are a great option. It wicks away moisture, is breathable and super soft. Synthetic or mixed-fibre materials are also a good way to go, as they help to remove moisture from the skin.
2.
Mid layer
The mid layer depends on how cold it is outside – there could be just one in spring but several in winter. The purpose is insulation, and it should be close to the body, but not keep the kids from moving freely. Fleece, thinner synthetic jackets, or thicker wool garments are all great options. A bonus is if the garments have zippers or openings, for easy adjustment of temperature.
3.
Cover layer
The final layer should keep the kids dry and protected in a variety of weather conditions. The best type of cover layer is both wind and water-repellent and made from a durable material that support playtime and movement. The rainwear, a good winter overall, a shell jacket, and a warmer padded jacket are great investments.
Cover layers – what to choose?
When it comes to choosing the correct outer layer, keep weather and activity in mind. For rainy days with low to mid-level activity, rubbery waterproof garments are the best choice. These garments are typically easy to maintain, hardwearing and durable. For a more active day outside, opt for functional outerwear which has a good breathing ability and won’t obstruct movement.
Warming accessories
Gloves, hats, and waterproof accessories are all important layering essentials for chillier days outside. Make sure most of the skin is covered, especially for kids that get cold easily. For hands you can use a pair of super stretchy magic gloves, with a layer of waterproof mittens. For rainier days, choose some longer waterproof mittens that go over the arm of the jacket or overall to prevent getting wet in case of rain or snow. Hats with fleece lining are also a good option, as they will retain the warmth, but help wick the moisture away.
