A lesson in layers

A lesson in layers
To dress a playful kid in the right clothes when the temperatures shift outside, can be a real struggle. How can they be warm throughout the day, but not sweat as they become more active? The trick is to layer! There are three types of layers you need to keep in mind when dressing the kids. The base layer which helps keep the moisture away, a mid-layer that helps them stay warm and the cover layer that helps protect from rain, wind, or snow.

Base layer
The layer closest to the skin should be breathable, fitted and feel comfortable on the skin. Quality materials, such as merino wool, are a great option. It wicks away moisture, is breathable and super soft. Synthetic or mixed-fibre materials are also a good way to go, as they help to remove moisture from the skin.

Mid layer
The mid layer depends on how cold it is outside – there could be just one in spring but several in winter. The purpose is insulation, and it should be close to the body, but not keep the kids from moving freely. Fleece, thinner synthetic jackets, or thicker wool garments are all great options. Cover layer
The final layer should keep the kids dry and protected in a variety of weather conditions. The best type of cover layer is both wind and water-repellent and made from a durable material that supports playtime and movement. Rainwear, a good snow suit, a shell jacket, and a warmer padded jacket are great investments.

Which outer layer should I choose?
Choosing the correct outer layer depends on weather and activity. Check out our Kids Performance wear collection which includes shell outerwear that's waterproof, windproof and highly abrasion resistant, featuring innovative kinetic design. The shell jacket can be paired with the fleece or insulated jacket from the same collection thanks to a smart zip in system.

Warming accessories
Gloves, hats, and waterproof accessories are all important layering essentials for chillier days outside. Layer our stretchy magic gloves under waterproof mittens. For extra rainy days, choose mittens with longer cuffs that overlap the sleeve cuffs of the jacket. A fleece lined hat is a great option for cold winter days as it keeps your kid's head warm while wicking away moisture.
