Your most common questions
Is the period panty leak-proof even if you bleed heavily?
Female Engineering® make period-proof underwear for all flow levels, from light to heavy bleeders. For those worried about bleeding more, we recommend starting out by wearing the period panty at home during a heavy bleeding day. That will put it to the test and make it easier to figure out how it works.
How many times can they be used and washed? How long will they last?
Our period panties are made to last at least 50 washes, which is far above industry standards. The number of washes is determined by the gusset absorption layer in our Engineered Leak Tech™, which has an antibacterial and anti-odour treatment that tends to lose a little bit of effectiveness after 50 washes. It is likely that the function of the panty will last longer though, but 50 washes is what we can guarantee. However, the fabric, form and fit of the panty will last a lot longer. If a panty is worn and washed once per menstruation cycle, it will last around 4 years.
How much blood can the period underwear hold?
Our period-proof underwear come in different absorbency levels, much like disposable menstrual products:

20 ml Medium ≈ 2 tampons/pads

What is period underwear?
Our period-proof panties have integrated menstrual protection and can be worn for up to 10 hours. Then you rinse them, wash them and wear them again and again. Thanks to the Engineered Leak Tech™, the panties can absorb blood while keeping you dry, comfy and odour-free.
Our period-proof underwear are engineered to replace disposable products and menstrual cups completely. They come in a great variation of styles, colors and absorbency levels, making it easy for you to find your perfect match.
Should I combine the period panties with other protection?
Sometimes one plus one equals three, and sometimes it doesn’t. As long as the absorbency underwear level is matched with your flow level, additional menstrual protection isn’t necessary. Our period-proof panties are engineered to keep you dry and safe all day.
However, some like to combine their period panties with other menstrual protection over the course of the entire menstruation cycle. This is of course a deeply individual thing, and we encourage you to explore and find your own optimal solution.
How many period underwear do I need?
Our period-proof underwear is washable and can be used again. And again. We recommend starting with 3-5 pairs: that way, you’re covered for an entire menstruation cycle without having to do too much laundry. But every person is unique, with individual flow levels and laundry facilities. So, you can always start with 1-2 pairs to complement your usual protection. That‘s a good way to ease into using a new product - and to find out what works best for you.
How do I know when to change period underwear?
Our period panties don't work the same way as disposable tampons or pads do, so you don't normally change them during the day. Our most absorbent period panty can hold up to 50 ml, which is a very large amount of blood - most women bleed 35 ml on average during their period.
Just choose the absorbency level that meets your individual needs (or a higher one if you want to feel extra safe). Then wear the panties for the whole day - or night.
Over time, you’ll get to know how your period panties deal with your own unique flow, and how you can adapt the absorbency level for different days of your cycle. Here are some signs to look out for, so that you know what level you need:
- The weight of the gusset: the heavier it is, the fuller it is
- The amount of blood traces you see on the wicking layer (the layer closest to the skin)
- The stiffness: if the gusset is full, it might feel a bit stiff, as well as thicker than when freshly-washed
Does period panties smell?
This is one of our most commonly asked questions. And No. They don't. The anti-odour function in our panties works in two ways:
1) antibacterial so that bacteria cannot multiply and
2) odour eliminating so unpleasant odours cannot develop.
The anti-odour treatment is applied to our wicking layer and absorbent layer of the gusset.
Are Female Engineering’s panties treated with anything?
When we produce our panties, we use an anti-bacterial and odour-preventing treatment in the absorbent gusset, called Agion Active XL, that contains the antimicrobial substances silver copper zeolite and silver zeolite. The treatment is one of the best currently available. Our period panties are certified by OEKO-TEX®, which means that the products have been evaluated for the content of substances harmful to health.
Why do we use this treatment?
We do this to prevent bacterial growth that leads to the panties starting to smell, which is the biggest concern we have identified in our customer surveys regarding period-proof panties.
Antimicrobial substances are strictly regulated in EU law and the substances used, silver copper zeolite and silver zeolite, have been approved for use in textile products.
What’s the sizing like for period panties?
We recommend you go for the same size as you usually choose. Our period-proof panties are designed to feel snug at first, and then relax with washing and repeated wear for that perfect fit.

Can I use period panties during nighttime?
Yes, very much so. Regular period-proof underwear will most likely do the job perfectly well during the night. But, depending on your flow level and sleeping position (some of us just can’t keep still, right?) you might need a little extra protection when sleeping. And that's why we created night panties.
The unique thing about our night underwear is the length of the gusset – it guarantees safety when you sleep. It doesn’t matter if you sleep on your back or snooze on your stomach (or maybe both?). The blood will stay exactly where it should, all night. Sweet dreams!
Can I wear panties even after giving birth?
Our period panties are great for taking care of your post-partum bleeding as well as the little leaks you might experience after giving birth. Remember to always keep a close eye on the condition of your post-partum bleeding, as it is an important indicator of your uterus’s health. If you need to change after just 1-3 hours (depending on the panty’s absorption level) or have any other concerns – always consult the medical care.
How can period panties prevent leakage?

Can period panties be used for incontinence?
These period panties are primarily developed to absorb menstruation, but are also perfectly good at keeping small urine leakages, bladder leaks and sneeze leaks safe. Female Engineering's period panties are not classified as medical products and are therefore not intended to be used for any medical purposes, such as treatment, relief of or compensation for a possible illness, injury or disability. If you experience medical problems, you should therefore firstly seek out medical guidance from a healthcare professional.
